I cannot understand so many of the people here asking incredibly asinine questions about their sick pets. I was violated (I WAS rude and angry, I admit, and deserved the violation, BTW) recently because I told someone they were too stupid to deserve the love of an animal. If an animal is sick, laying in it's vomit for a day or so, and in pain, I feel it is criminal to not take that animal to the vet. Do other people feel the same about this?
It really frosts me to see sweety answers that allow the poor animal to suffer for days before seeking medical care.

I personally feel so much better that there are others, and apparently in the majority, who agree with me. I do think Alli misses the point, though, that SOME PEOPLE need a not so subtle wake up call. If all the people here answered these stupid people with the honest advice to get off the butts and take the pet to the vet; instead of coddling them, this column might do some good instead of enabling people to be so selfish.
So what if we all get a violation, when someone reads ten answers telling them that they are mean, stupid, unloving pet owners, perhaps the shame of that would make them think they are in the wrong. Being so nice to everyone, lowering the standards of decency to be politically correct is a bunch of krap in this case. Think of the animals, not your own little feelings.

I agree. I think it's extremely stupid to come on here and ask for advice for a sick animal to ppl who are NOT trained to treat sick animals. And even if they WERE trained to treat sick animals there is NO way they could know what was wrong without seeing and examining the animal. Then what's even worse... they get even MORE idiotic ppl who tell them what to do about their sick animals and they LISTEN!!! This is the WHOLE reason why vets go to SCHOOL!!! If someone could be a vet by providing answers to yahoo questions all day there would be a lot more vets around... TAKE YOUR PETS TO THE DR!!! It's common sense. =) Thanks for letting me vent.

Agreed.

Many people come here with absurd questions while their pet lay dying, and it may have been like that for weeks, yet they sit on Yahoo Answers for days asking what to do next (I stay around the bird area because I have/know bird stuff better, many people say their birds are so sickly ill and describe the OBVIOUS signs of horrible illness, and ask if their bird is sick and ask what they can do... because taking a bird to a vet is absurd, right!?). In that time, their animal could have been taken to the ER vet and saved, rather than dying so sickly and painfully and having such a prolonged suffering. It IS criminal and people so stupid shouldn't be allowed to have pets or anything living under their care. You would think someone that stupid wouldn't have the mental capacity to button up their own clothes, but miraculously, they're able to type and type and type about OH MY DOG IS SO SICK SHE'S BLEEDING AND THROWING UP EVERYWHERE, SAVE ME Y! ANSWERS.

I hate those answers that don't advocate taking the animal to the vet. Is it not obvious it's in significant pain? What I hate even more is when people say they can't afford the vet care. This phrase comes along so often, but it always holds true. If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet. WHY get a pet when you can't care for it? And yes, things do come up in life, and that's why vets have payment plans. Some people also think because their last animal died in vet care or the last animal had to be put down at a vet's, all vets are bad and their future animals should never see them. BS! I try not to sugar coat things, but I also try to penetrate the thick skulls of such idiots by being polite about it, if there is even a polite way of "you're a moron, get your butt off the computer and make a mad dash to the vet before you kill your pet". You want the message to get through, but it's so obvious that being rude gets you ignored and your GOOD advice is never heard because it came out harshly.

Truth hurts.

I agree, some people don't deserve the love of an animal if that's what they do.

Edited to add: Oh! And THEN there are the BREEDING questions! UGH! "I think my dog is pregnant, she's a whore". Fix her, stupid. "My bird laid an egg, how do I hatch it?" "My rabbit had babies and I don't know what to do with them". "My -insert any animal- had babies and isn't taking care of them, what do I do?" etc. etc. Morons who breed their pets because they think it's their nature. We create their nature and they do what they do accordingly. Way to bring new, homeless and unwanted pet life into the world and thusly contributing to the grossly growing pet overpopulation with your blatant lack of knowledge, prior and current research, and likely poor bloodlines (BYB results, pet store animals, etc.). *headdesk*

Sometimes you can't help but want to answer sarcastically..
. But.....

Your example is just one of the areas where we see pointless questions. Wading through all the foolish questions is a real pain. There ARE some very good questions on Yahoo Answers but sometimes they are hard to find. I've found questions where I'm truly interested in hearing what other people had to say. I've found questions that I could usefully answer.

Since we can't indicate "Bad Question" what other recourse do we have, other than indicating that in our answer. I suppose you could just ignore the bad questions. But that doesn't really send the message to the asker. especially when they are foolish enough to be here asking questions like am I sick?, is my child sick? is my pet sick? What should I do about it?

Opinion is a tricky thing. If you see a violation - in YOUR opinion - you can report it. So can anyone else, unfortunately even when they really just mean I don't like your answer.

There is no reasonable way to monitor or control that. Sometimes it's really obvious that someone went down the line and marked bad answer to every answer they simply did not agree with (look at the political & religious questions!) When you ask a question or read other peoples' answers, you should be tolerant of their right to have an opinion. BAD ANSWER should be reserved to answers that are not responding to the question. But we can't control that.

If some of these people got zero answers to their pointless questions, maybe they would get the message.

If they are being dangerously foolish as in your example, it's hard not to try to get them to "Wake up" and learn what they should be doing. Sarcasm may be the jolt they need...

Here's the BUT.......
As 'they' say, you attract more bees with honey than with vinegar. If the sarcasm simply makes them lash back, it has achieved nothing other than letting you vent. If you are answering because you truly want to help them, you need to point them in the right direction and perhaps, try to tell them they shouldn't be asking that here.

Yes, this angers me very much. I work at a vet clinic, and we have to euthanize a lot of animals ONLY because the owners just waited too long to bring them in... But i also realize that people do NOT respond to mean answers. They just ignore them. I know because I ignore some of the mean answers I get. So when I see a question like that I just say in a nice way that they are dealing with an emergency, and need to call a VET Now! I find that people actually listen to the answer when you get your point across in a nice way. I think it is best for the pet to just inform the owner of the seriousness of the problem so they get their pet to the vet as soon as possible.

I too have had violations. Two in the last day from the same person to be exact. This woman went on and on about how she "rescued" a mixed breed dog from a puppy mill, and then went on to breed her over and over again. The dog was about to pop, and having some severe symptoms that something was wrong, and she is on here asking people what to do. What is wrong with these people. I point out that the rescue organization who rescued the dog and placed her with this woman would take her away if they found out she continued to breed this dog for a profit. People like her should be ashamed of themselves, yet they take this poor me attitude. It is truly scary that these people are aloud to have pets, or kids for that matter. Some of the people asking questions on here seem so out of it, it surprises me they can turn the computer on to get on here. It breaks my heart that their animals are suffering because of their ignorance. You can't say anything about it though, because they just hit you with a violation. So what can you do about it?

YES! People often treat animals as if they have no feelings or right. When you buy animal it's yuor responsiblity until it dies. I have a turtle which I will not give up and spend tons of money so it has a life. I feel sad and mad at myself when the tank goes dirty, but I will not cut the work he makes by taking him back to the pet store where they have a pond that already has 20+ turtles in it. The same goes with my 2 cats. It's heart breaking to see them so upset when no one is around to give them affection. My theory is when you buy an animal take responsibility. It's your from now until death. Even if yuo don't love it, it deserves the best treatment. I can't understand how people neglect animals or abuse them!

I agree with you 100%. Some questions should not even be asked. The animals should go to the vets. We cannot diagnose and help a sick animal. We can only give suggestions and many times this isn't good enough.

yes!! i absolutely hate sick animal questions. if they really cared about their pet, then they would be on the phone with their vet, not asking for juvenile opinions on yahoo answers, bcuz i know they're are a few vets out there on answers, but mostly the answers those people get are opinions. i always see people on answers who obviously don't love their pets, and drives me crazy, bcuz there's almost nothing you can do about it. and i love animals and i hate abusive, or stupid owners, especially the ones who say something like, "i got a hamster, and i don't know how to care for it." that grinds my gears!!

lol hun!!! sometimes it seems to me i receive as many violations as best answers lol. no i do NOT think its wrong to voice opinion when abuse, in any form, to any living thing, is an issue. especially when ppl like you and myself end up caring for abused ppl and animals others discard through lack of responsibility. some people respond to sweet takling yes, but unfortunately some others are only bright enough to respond to shock treatment it seems. its subjective to the intellectual level of the recipient, and the question phrased.

yep attempt to respond to truthfully yet asker would not constantly prefer to pay attention it - and likely I have been given reported for the main undemanding answer purely declaring to asker that they had asked the comparable question thrice in a week ! no longer something abusive
