We use to get a $3 credit toward our next purchase at Staples, but they have stopped giving credit. Thanks for your help

Empty cartridges *are* worth something. If not you
you, then to charities. There are many links. Two
random Stateside ones, given below ( which lead to
others).

They can be re-used and re-filled many times if not
in any way damaged; price depends on the make and
model of printer.

And finally, I certainly hope you responsibly recycle,
rather than land fill??!

Empty the cartridges are worth nothing, but you can refill them. That's much cheaper than buying new ones, but some printers accept only new ones.
