Is it true that if you are late with your payment, the stuff in it automatically becomes their prpperty and they can do whatever they want with it?

No, that's not true at all, they are required to keep it for a set amount of time, being custodians of the property. Just like an apartment complex cannot immediately divvy up your gear if you move out and leave it.
The problem is proving what you had if they do this, keep an inventory. If they did keep your stuff before 30 days has gone by, see the local law enforcement about a theft complaint.

yes, they can auction it off for the amount owed by you for late storage.
