Great question, I like to think he was, but only Calvin could see him. In quite a few pictures where someone else is there with him, Hobbes has shrunk in size, and lies motionless on the ground though. But still, maybe he's just playing around ;)

Calvin and Hobbes were based on two theologians/philosophers named John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes. So technically Hobbes was real. But that's probably not what you meant in your question.

Hobbes was a real stuffed tiger toy. Calvin on the other hand saw him as a real live tiger to talk and play with.

I do too. I never really doubted that he wasn't. He was so funny, thoughtful, and charming that he seemed in no way connected to Calvin other than by way of friendship.
