I remember going to these grocery stores a lot when I was a kid. Now they don't exist any more except in Canada. I used to run around the store when I was a kid. How come these stores aren't in the states any more?

The company may be around. They changed the name to Farmer Jack in our state, whom they had bought out initially to get the foot in the door. They think people do not like their name. So they may have changed the name in many states. It is also possible that in many states they got bought out. I think they had a multi-state operation and was a pretty big chain.
