He killed at least five prostitutes in London in 1889: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly. The murders became famous because the killer seriously mutilated his victims after striking the fatal blow. Nobody knows for certain who the murderer was, although various theories have been put forward, with varying degrees of plausibility. Most recently the crime novelist Patricia Cornwell has suggested painter Walter Sickert as a candidate, but with very little evidence to support this claim it has not been taken very seriously.
Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were conspicuous in that, while the murders took place over a two-month period, they were both killed on the same night. Mary Jane Kelly was mutilated with exceptional viciousness; the police surgeon who inspected the crime scene committed suicide some months later, though the two events may have had no connection.

Jack the Ripper murdered prostitutes in the streets of 19th century London. Like all serial murderers, his killing had a theme to it( prostitutes) and like the typical sociopath he saw himself as a crusader wiping out evil.

He committed some of the most heinous crimes recorded for the consumption of the general public. This created a "tabloid mentality" that people still feed off of today.

Killed some women in a rather grisly way. No one apparently knew for sure who did it.
