1. as cells grow larger, the ratio of surface area to volume decreases, making it increasingly more difficult to transport enough materials through the cell membrane to supply the entire cell
2. increased volume also means that genetic material need longer to reach destinations

Cells divide to keep us running. If our cells did not constantly reproduce we would die. Although there are around 77 trillion cells in our body, if they did not divide we can use that up pretty quick and die. Cells go under Cell Reproduction and the cycle it goes through is as follows.
Interphase, Prophase, metaphse, anaphase, telophase, and finally cytokinases.
This is the process all of our cells go through in order to reproduce another cell. And this whole process takes about five days. So next time when you lose a couple of cells, don't worry they will come back I hope this answers your question.
Miss Little Agony: We should not offend each other. If someone knows the answer why would they ask a question? So just answer people's question and leave it at that sorry if I made you mad I really don't mean to

Cells divide to optimize the transfer of nutrients in and out of the cell. Basically, if a cell gets too big, there is too much inside to be taken care of by the membrane. So, it splits to make more cell membrane for the amount of stuff inside.
Think of it like this. A block that is 2x2x4 has a volume of 16 and a surface area of 40.
If that block divides into 2 blocks that are 2x2x2, they have a volume of 8 each (still 16 total) and a total surface area of 48 which means there is more membrane surface area to take in nutrients and get rid of waste.

I just learned this in biology class. Cells divide by a process called mitosis. The whole concept behind this cell division is to maintain homeostasis, or equlibrium, in the body. It replaces dead or dying cells and aids in the growth of the organism.

oh my goodness... what a loaded question.. if body cells didnt divide.. there'd be no. anything!!! when babies are born.. how do they develop? from a fetus..ok.. what is a fetus before its a baby? a ball of cells that keeps dividing! what are skin cells.. they grow inside and push their way up.. keepin the newest below and pushing the onld ones up.. which is why the top layers of skin is dead.... and hair.. we lose roughly around 100 hairs a day... we'd be bald if the hair root cells didnt divide and make new folicles.. we wouldnt be alive... if cells didnt divide. when we get hurt.. the cells regenerate and fill in the gash.... when we are young our bones are small.. but a piece of bone called the epiphyseal plate ..made of cartilage.. grows and pushes its way down.. making bones longer.. then bone cells..divide..and fill in the cartilage.. everything is cells and cells are everything.. i hope i helped explain a little.
