If you understand the context of the times (the renaissance) in which the invention and early use of telescopes occured, you will see that it helps the process of moving control of how mankind considered its place in the universe away from the church and into the hands of scientists and the general population. It was only a disadvantage for the religious types, for science and the world at large it was a huge boost.

hmmmm disadvantage, hmmmm
bumped the religious fundies from the center of the universe. and also gave them and all us the evidence the universe is expanding thus was started from being very very small
but these are only a disadvantage to religion cuase it knocks them down from there pedistal of knowing everything which in turn is really nothing

It made Galileo's life miserable, he was under arrest for the rest of his life for finding out the earth was not the center of the universe

I don't know that there is a disadvantage for men, but for women it would be all those guys peaking at them through their bedroom window at night.
