I have a Dell Dimenstion 9200 Dell Capable pc currently running XP Home. I was planning on buying Vista in around 4 months or so (When the next editions are released).

However I have just been informed that Dell PC's can not have Vista installed on them. I was going to buy Vista Home Premium Upgrade however have been informed that in order to install Vista on a Dell system, I need to fork out an extra £100 for the full Vista Home Premium.

Dell have been very unhelpful (as normal) with this matter so can some one please sort this out.

What version do I need:

Vista Home Premium Upgrade

or

Vista Home Premium Full

You should be able to do what you wish, first ,call them tell them to send you an original windows xp disc, not a recover disc by dell, two, since you paid a licence to use windows in your dell, they should send you an original windows xp disc ,now it should be free since you already paid for you system , again once you get it install the original windows over the existing dell windows, or format and install it then do buy the up grade vista upgrade and finish.!!

Well now that you have your fill of people's opinions on Dells and on Vista (I have both, and both work very well), let me get to your ACTUAL question. There is no reason a Dell PC would not be able to run Home Premium Upgrade, all you need is a working copy of XP installed to use the upgrade version.

As you own a copy of Windows XP, you are fully entitled to use the upgrade to Vista.

One problem associated with the upgrade is to install Vista from a blank hard disk, you would first have to install Windows XP and then upgrade to Vista.

Another solution is to install Vista without a serial number (this installs a 30 day trial version) and then "upgrade"(install again) with your purchased Vista serial number.

Whichever path you choose to pursue, you are legally entitled to use the Windows Vista Upgrade option.

My advice would be to stick with XP which is working fine on your PC. As with all new operating systems the early release will be buggy. So if you don't want to be a guinea pig wait a year or so before upgrading. Only upgrade if the new Vista OS offers your something you must have.

My PCs run W2K which I'm quite happy with. It does what we want. At work I use XP which I have configured to look and feel like W2K :)

Oh and the Upgrade should be okay providing the XP is a Full version and not an Upgrade too. If your XP is an upgrade version you may need W2K full or W98 full to upgrade with. The Vista Full may also only install on a clean machine.

Shorty ... I suggest saving your Pounds and take your girlfriend out instead. Read these recent stories from my list of links below and see if you think you still need Vista.

Yes, maybe you do ... I'm not sure. Then again, maybe you don't. Set aside your excitement about Vista and try to make an objective decision. Good luck, Shorty.

Dump your Dell computer and get a MacBook! It will be the best and only computer you will ever need. The vista program is a joke! MacBook is far more advanced in software and hardware than any other junk computer out there. Believe me I been thru it.
Now I am a Mac Guy and proud of it.

I would wait until you get a new PC and have it pre-loaded, I would also get the premiuum version as the other Home versions did not do well in tests. To upgrade would be a wast of money in my view as its over priced (as with all MS platforms)

Well i think what everyone is saying ''if its not broken -why fix it'',do you remember when service pack 2 first came out?-it was shambolic-and as for Dell well my experience with their support was a joke!!However if xp is working ok on your Dell just sit back and take notes.

Hi. Personally I would stick with XP. It will be supported for at least 5 years and works as well as Vista right now. Do you really need Aero?
