A boss can be both but I think it works out for the boss and his company to be a coach because he needs to encourage his workers to be better at what their job. A boss can be a friend, too because if something is keeping his employees from performing right, he should be able to help them through that.

He MUST be both ,and he must try very hard to do that ,cause the best leaders in the world in the past or in the present or in the future has combined those two elements and mad them leaders ,cause when the boss becomes a friend with the people he works with there will be energy to make the business better and he will know the problems that his employees are facing and that's gives him the privileges to fix it faster ,and he should be a coach too cause that will earn him the trust in his decision from the people he works with and the leading option .

I think a boss can very well be both. They can mentor as well as lend a helping hand when needed. It really depends on the personality of the boss to make friends with.
