That is the 500 Billion dollar question Brad. The answer is, you can't.

And if you are an administration dumb enough to bring down the government of a country that has citizens with strong loyalties to a multitude of different sectarian and/or ethnic groups that have their own militias, it is going to end badly. Many of us predicted this months before the war started.

I don't know what US President Bill Clinton had in mind when he signed the into law H.R. 4655, the "Iraq Liberation Act of 1998." but the wording did include Democracy. Having kept up with Saddam's Iraq since the later '70s that seemed a good idea to me. http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/mideast/libera.htm

The Coalition under US President George Bush made it possible for 8 million Iraqis to go to the polls and freely vote - remember all those purple fingers?

I can't think of any instance where anyone but yourself has considered the notion of "FORCE democracy on people by bringing them to war" -- why would you even want to?

Well, you start by accusing them of something like WMD. Then you shock and awe them and blow up a few small towns. Then you start a civil war there so you don't have to waste as many bullets. Then your mission is accomplished. All you have to then is build massive military bases all around the place. Of course you also have to quietly keep sucking their oil dry so you'll have more money to keep attacking them. Hopefully most of them will move away. The ones left you just capture and imprison and torture. Pretty soon, after spending a half trillion dollars, you'll be able to start forcing democracy down their throats, but you must keep those oil wells pumping.

You just have to take oilfields (other resources) under control and set up puppets in government. This is what usa mean as "democracy".

I hope you aren't referring to the war in Iraq, because it has nothing to do with democracy.

Iraq held free elections and they wrote their own constitution. It is the insurgent radical islamist that are causing the stir trying to take over the young weak government. This is a power play, Democratic Iraq fighting the 1st century whack jobs. We are not forcing anything on them. We are helping them to hold on to what they want.
