The most famous contribution was the Tuskeegee Airmen. This was an entirely African-american fighter squadron, from mechanics all the way up to pilots. They were one of the best squadrons of WWII. They never lost a bomber under their care.

The National Archives actually have a lot of information and pictures of African Americans in World War 2: http://www.archives.gov/research/african-americans/ww2-pictures/

That might help.

Besides the Tuskeegee Airmen mentioned by Redshanks, the men of the Red Ball Express are heros to me. Read all about them at the site below (or google red ball express).

Mostly they were used as laborers. Very very few were in combat. There were some pilots in the Tuskegee Squadren but they were an exception.

They were used as cannon fodder in order to protect the white man.
They were meat. Just as they are today.
The word "contribution" does not apply to black people, unless they are dead or in the field. Or in a lab. Hope that answers your question, and vote for me as best answer please, i am trying to gain some popularity on the website. thanks in advance!
