You can make any size tank a marine tank! Bigger is usually recommended for beginners because the temperature and water chemistry will be more stable with the larger water volume. Most experts recommend at least a 30 gallon. I've gone as small as 2.5 gallons, but it's harder to do. I read an article a few years back in one of the fish magazine you see in pet stores (don't remember which one) when nano tanks were just becomming popular - there were photos of tanks under 1 gallon, but there aren't animals you can keep in tanks that size!

Stocking rates are less than for freshwater (consider about 5 gallons per inch of fish), more for active swimmers, so a good place to start might be planning for what fish you'd like to have and get a tank of that size!

you can easily do a marine tank in a 25 or 30 gallon tank. No problem at all. As a rule of thumb the larger the tank the easier to maintain, but that size will certainly work.
