I'm going against most of the groupon this one...they're more like dolphins. The mermen and the mermaids ahhh get together and months later the mermaid goes to a sheltered bay and while the merman swims patrol to keep predators away the mermaid gives birth and helps the merbaby to the surface so it can breath.
that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

The fact that mermaids have bellybuttons, and thus had umbilical cords leads me to believe when they reproduce they become human and only return to the water when the child turns into a merchild. After all only mammals have bellybuttons.

In the dark of night, they swim to shore. Once on shore, their fins become legs allowing them to procreate and deliver their children. They use the restroom like other fish. Hope this helps! :)

I would assume the same way fish do. They lay their eggs, which are then fertilized by the male of the species. Doesn't seem too romatic by our standards.

I think they are like whales and dolphins. Usually merpeople are depicted as having a belly button, so they are like mammals.

They either lay eggs which get inseminated or their young emerges from their mouth. Fish poop and breed all the time, don't they?

I'd imagine like most amphibians...they spawn...lay eggs and then the male fertilises them...LOL
