Go to a Vocational Rehab center and see if they will give you a Profile study for Work Vocations (you would likely have to pay for it but it may very well be worth it)...these are extremely indepth and take approx. 1.5 hours to complete roughly. But, they are well worth it...you'll have so many choices that your head will spin but it will definitely give you ideas of what careers you will do the best in starting with the top ones and going down.

Or...you can sit down and evaluate ALL of your knowledge, experience, likes, dislikes, interests, hobbies, talents etc and from that see if there is anything that you can determine would give you strength in another area of work. Perhaps you have always wanted to operate a business of your own....you know children but don't want to teach...you know parents, the subjects you taught etc., perhaps there is a business in there somewhere that is lacking in your area and that you could create.

Perhaps becoming a Psychologist for children...for parents, teens etc. Something that you preferrably do not have to take further courses for but if you do, they can be short courses that will allow you to enter into your next field quickly.

Here are some sites that offer free career profiling. Don't know how or if they'll assist but never know:

http://similarminds.com/career.html

http://www.testingroom.com/ (This one does cost $14.95 to obtain extended reports but offers a free 'short' profile)

http://www.testing-direct.com/ (based in UK I believe, have to sign up and there could be charges for detailed info but I believe there is free services too)

A few to get you started, good luck!

It's good that you had a choice in the matter... I was forced into finding another position in my late 30's... What I trained for and worked toward for 11 years has become almost obsolete.

It sucks having to start over again so late in life... I don't recommend it unless you actually like doing things like jumping out of planes and bungee jumping.... To me, it is the same thing!

Go on vacation instead. You'll come back with a fresh perspective. learning to be content where you are as you are... is far more valuable if you ask me!

and all this coming from a person that actually thrives on change!
It is frightening though when it comes down to your means of support and livelihood. Different animal!

I'm in a similar position. One ideas is to sign on to some agencys - supply work, if you are a teacher. Try different schools, less responsibility, but far less security! Try also tempory office work. Don't make any commitments yet until you have had time to think.

The first question to ask yourself is - Which do I like working with the most - Things, People or Information?

Things means you can do things with your hands - like arts, design, carpentry, mechanical etc etc

People - means sales, psychology, customer service, teacher, bank teller, etc

Info means - working with data such as analyst, accountant, payroll, editor, journalist, law, marketing, etc etc

And from this you can narrow down your choices.

Good luck.

Try different jobs for a short time, it's gonna help you decide what you like and what you're good at. Retail, hospitality, temp office jobs (you might get various roles), care work....the possibilities are endless. Good luck and enjoy yourself.

Reading a college prospectus would be a good start,

What sort of things do you like to do?

Do you like working with Youngsters alot?
Do you like computers
Do you like cooking?

I suppose it comes down to what you like to do.

Im starting college in september with plans for a degree in youth work after 5 years of been a donkey and a dosser.

Hope you make a good choice for your self :-)

Take a part time job in something easy like a shop or cleaning. Do this for a month or two and spend your free time thinking about what job would make YOU happiest.

Try different things part time. Write down the things that you're good at and see what kinds of work utilize those skills.

Depends on what you are doing for schools. Are you a lunch lady, janitor, bus driver, secretary or teacher? What do you consider "paid quite well" is? Over $35,000 over $50,000 or over $100,000?
Need more details to answer well.
