When someone is talking to you and they intentionally use words they know you are unfamiliar with. There is a term for this, and I'd love to know what it is so I can bust my friend who does it all the time.

I'd label him as a narcissistic-perfectionist aggressive (NPA) with a superiority complex thrown in for good measure. :)
This individual obviously has a concurrent combination of all three of the behavioral complexes: glory, perfection and power. I would expect the following qualities of him: narcissistic ambition, perfectionist attention to detail and sense of duty, and the aggressive need for triumph through power. In this case, he's looking for your soft underbelly, your weaknesses; knowing and using words that you are unfamiliar with to make you feel inferior. Try brushing up on your vocabulary to outsmart him.

How about arrogant, smart a**,pompous, immature, these are words that spring to mind. I am a very academic person with a large vocabulary and I purposely use common words to be as clear as possible and not accidentally embarrass anyone. Your friend sounds like a jerk I'm sorry to say! Don't worry about trying to call him out-- this will only egg him on-- trust me! Ignore him and the behavior. Believe me no good will come of that, remember a mans character is not judged by their IQ, he may think he's making you look stupid but he's only exposing his lack of character.
