im considering going to college up to 14 hours away does that seem too far when it comes down to it?

That all depends on you. I went to college 2 hours (by car) from home. That was good for me, since I was far enough from home that I wasn't tempted to go home just for an afternoon (in fact I spent almost all weekends at school, too) but I was close enough that I could go home for the weekend if I wanted to (say, for my Mom's birthday). I knew plenty of people at my school who were from the other side of the country or even other continents and they were perfectly happy, too.

Not at all. Go as far away as you're comfortable with. If you're close to your folks and want to make weekend visits, then 14 hours is a good distance to drive. If you don't plan to go home on weekends or vacation, well then it doesn't matter how far away you are. Do you plan to see your friends on breaks? Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend that you are going to see on the weekends? Do you get homesick? These are the things that you have to ask yourself. Also, do you plan to work while going to college? If so, you might not have the time to go on weekend trips. Bottom line is to ask the question: How often or how important is it for me to go home for a weekend, and will I be able to drive it alone?

Don't go so far away that your mom won't be doing your laundry for you. After all, she wouldnt want you to think you were grown up and could take care of yourself, or anything.
Better stay within half-an hour of home. THat way as soon as you have a problem, your folks can run right over and take care of you.
