My boyfriend has black mold growing on his basement walls. They are cement. In the past this room was used for a bedroom. He would like to get it cleaned up and use it again, but not in the condition it is in. Please-- only serious answers.

Bleach water and a scrub brush will remove the outer mold. The question is where is it coming from. If the house is only damp in one part of the basement, check for proper drainage away from the foundation. If it only occurs during certain periods of the year a humidifier would probably be sufficient. There are waterproof paints available to keep seepage at bay, but beware of hiding damage.
When you clean mold if you dont do it wet you release the spores into the air and will give them the opportunity to multiply. When you disturb it, only do so after wetting area. Make sure to use a 2 bucket system, clean wash water and a rinse bucket. Change the rinse bucket frequently and I recommend disposable paperproducts for the mop up effort. It will be messy. A respirator is a must, the bleach and mold are not good for you. Eye protection for splashes (yes we all make messes) and you're good to go.

Put bleach in a spray container and spray the walls. Dont water it down. Let set for 24 hrs then paint over with original Kilz's. Mold problem, no more!

If you can trash the rug (If it has one) would use a mixture of Dish detergent 1 tablespoon, 1 pint bleach and fill remainder of 1 gallon with water. Scrub with brush and rinse. Would make sure to use goggles rubber gloves and proper respirator for the bleach and mold spores as some of those molds will make you very sick.

Add Boric Acid to water and wash the walls and floor. Make sure that you are using eye protection and wear gloves.
Happy scrubbing.

Apparently the basement is rather damp, therefore, I would suggest that you use a de-humifier during the humid months.
