I personally hate the idea, i mean what are we fighting for in the first place? yes, i know we hear to liberate the people of iraq, but is that the real reason? If it wasnt for all the oil there, would american foreign policy even care about all the bad things that have happened there? For example, there has been non stop civil war in africa which has caused the rise of many really harsh dicatorships which dont care at all for there own people and wud rather let them die. And what does the US do? Just send aid, no troops, no massive war effort, none of that. Well whats the difference in iraq? they had no nuclear weapons, they have never posed a real threat to the US, and like africa there leader was an evil dictator. And no dont say it was b/c the terrorist cells there like taliban. the roots to those groups is throughout the mid east, and they just simply recruit from countryies like iraq. If anything countries like syria and iran pose more of a threat then iraq ever did. its oil huh?

Now the thing is my life is perfect without the draft, ive been workin since i was 16 and ive bought everything i own. there is a big misconception among older folks, kids my age are not immature like u think. i mean yea some are, but when u check wit the ones in college trying to make there lives better, its hard to find them. And another thing, the war with iraq is not a war for freedom, its a war like vietnam in that no one knows the purpose. please tell me how my freedom wud have been hurt with us not going to war there

As a veteran, I'm against it. We are closer to it than many think.
Bush has put America in a very tough spot.

What most people don't even realize is that every war the U.S. ever fought had a draft until Desert Storm in 1990.
The only difference with Vietnam was that the media vilified it to the point that it seems like no one wanted to fight in it. War is hell, and now that we allow embedded reporters... there is no way for us to easily win any war we ever fight.
In regard to your other comments, you're right, Iran posed a much larger threat than Iraq (Syria is still a shell of a country) however, the oil remark is just misguided. Iraq's total yearly oil output is worth roughly $35 billion. That sounds impressive until put into perspective.... that's roughly 1/5 the Gross State Product of Minnesota. To spend almost $85 a year fighting a war for $35 billion worth of oil (which isn't guaranteed) just simply doesn't add up.
Iraq has been poorly handled, but the "blood for oil" chant is a joke. Getting back to the draft... the only one who wanted it were Democrats including Charlie Rangel who proposes it almost every year. The simple truth is, we don't need a draft for this war and the military doesn't want one. Even if we were to bomb the hell out of Iran (since they are the ones causing the instability in Iraq) the military has more than enough people enlisted.

Its hard to say if the draft will return or not. Personally, I don't think its going to return any time soon, and the US Military leaders don't want it. Most people have a pretty negative perspective regarding the war in Iraq, and a forced military draft may help to intensify and reflect these peoples oppinions and beliefs in a BAD way. I really think it would be a LAST RESORT technique, and I think that most people would stand up and join the military in a time of REAL CRISIS instead of the government actually needing the draft. At this point, a draft might just blow up in the face of these politicians and it might not be a pretty scenario.
The issue of reinstating the draft is a debatable issue. But the fact that you can't FORCE patriotism on American's is NOT debatable. As you sit back on your fat a** at your computer monitor eating your potatoe chips and using the gift of intelligence that evolution has made possible. You conjure up this little theory. Your intelligence says that your little theory is correct, and so does your ego. You believe that you can solve these serious issues, but you might be mistaken.
Putting your fat child in front of AK-47 bullets and IED's is, no doubt, an excellent way to help them "mature", and to also give them exercise. But then again, your fat child can grow up and mature naturally, which is much less dangerous. There is no doubt that America is the fattest country on the planet. There is no doubt that you people need to exercise more, but putting yourself in the middle of an Iraqi civil war that your president created is not a necessary exercise regimen to get back in shape. Maybe if we had less oil to use, you lazy people would actually get up and ride your bike to work, or maybe even walk! The Chinese do it every day, and so can you! Oh I know... Driving around your expensive sportscar that you'll be paying off for the rest of your life has delicate psychological value, value that you are too weak to submit.
Shawnie, don't flatter yourself and strut around with your little snooty *** attitude just because your husband is a marine. He isn't making sure that I sleep safe at night, I can protect my self just fine with these 6 shots. However, he might be protecting YOU by paying your bills while you cheat on him. Your husband and most of the soldiers over in Iraq are far from hero's. They are murderers, and what the United States did during the invasion of Iraq is, by definition: terrorism. Your husband is most likely not a hero; he is a political tool and a small chess piece with little status.

Please don't forget that this all started on that dreadful day, September the 11th. One thing led to another but all for the same reasons (To Stop Evil Doers) My husband is a US Marine and he is deployed to Iraq right now and has been there for a year fighting for your freedom so that you can sleep comfortable at night in your own bed. Should he need a rest I would expect others to step up and volunteer to take over, if they do not, then I am all for the draft. We are all brothers and sisters here and we should stand together no matter what the reason. Our future depends on it and so does life as we know it.
Please don't have hatred towards one of your own. No one is perfect and all of us will make mistakes and choices that we wish we wouldn't have.
Peace Out! and "Semper Fidelis" - (always faithful)
PS: You should watch on February 21, 2007 at 9 PM Eastern Time on PBS. You'll learn something.

there'll consistently be cowards fleeing to Canada if a draft is reinstated. The Peace Corp will additionally notice a upward thrust in applicants. a minimum of the human beings going into the Peace Corp are nonetheless doing some thing useful. My brother would be eligible to be drafted if that occurs. Serving interior the protection rigidity would desire to be the ideal element for him (assuming he returns abode alive). i does no longer desire for my brother to be drafted, yet whilst he became, i might motivate him to serve somewhat than shirk.

You make an excellent point. The only pro reason I can think of for reenstating the draft would be that it would close the gap a little more between the haves and have nots in this country. It is a considerable gap.

Would be a fantastic idea, get the kids off the streets and into something that will make them responsible and grow up, learn that personal hygiene is important, learn something to make a living at or go to school...and see really how the world lives outside the borders..

I see what you are speaking of but the draft
is not a bad idea. You only spend a couple of
years. It helps young people the chance to
mature. Also the benefits are great such as
a free college education. I am so glad and so
proud to have been in the military. I saw places
that I would never have been able to see
otherwise.
