Male betta's can as long as you only have one. It is not reccommended to mix with goldfish though because gold dish like to eat colorful things (i.e. betta fins).

They do best with semi agressive tropical fish (ones that do not get too large).

Now even though a Betta does not need a water heater or filter - the other fish will. So keep that in mind!

Female Bettas mix better with community (non agressive) tropical fish.

Yes, they can safely mix with most tropical "community" type fish such as most Tetras. Don't mix with Cichlids (except possibly Angel fish) which will kill the Beta.

you will be ok with a well planned tank. you need to include a decent amount of plants and hiding spots. in general go with small fast timid fish like small tetras and rasboras. add in 3 dwarf corys and you are set for 10 gallons.

Yes. Betta's can't live with other bettas but it can live with other fish. My neighbor has a Betta and it lives with many other fish. Don't worry.

Yes you can put bettas in a population. They will only attack other male bettas. But I would stay away from angels or fish with fins that resemble there own.

of course. but no fish with long, wavy fins like an angelfish. a Betta will kill any fish that looks like it...
