I wonder this too... some girls cake it on like a mask. I think its all to do with self convidence. Its like a mask they can hide behind.
I dont tend to wear much. Just a very fine base and mascara...and then if I go for a night out I add a bit of eye shadow or lip gloss but never both.
From what I gather guys prefer groomed makeup in a natural finish and not overdone.

Personal insecurity. I used to wear a lot of makeup and now I hardly wear any. If we are going out somewhere fancy I might wear a little bit nowadays but I feel more comfortable about the way I look now and no longer feel the need to lay it on thick. I really think it is a lack in personal confidence. As the years have gone by and I am now a mum and feel more confident as a person (and a woman) I don't feel the need to try to impress anyone by wearing makeup to look a certain way. The best thing is that now (in my late 30's) I get more wolf whistles and admiring looks than I used to when I was in my early 20's.
In a way it is a mask worn to hide their lack of self confidence.

i think its a personal thing, like if someone pierces their ear or not. its what the person thinks looks best on them, cuz some girls seriously don't need alot of make up, and other girls look normal without makeup, but waay cool with makeup.
i think guys start to notice that girls are wearing too much makeup when girls are sloppy/don't know how to do makeup.

A lot of girls don't learn how to properly put makeup on. Plus, most girls begin wearing makeup in their early teens, when they feel the least confident about themselves, and to make up for this pile on the makeup to basically hide from who they are. It is hard to change something once you've been doing in one way for so long. Most makeup that teenage girls can afford (because when I was in jr.high and high school my parents would not spend $1 on my makeup) is cheaply made and looks cheap and fake when applied. Now I ONLY wear mineral makeup, and my husband constantly tells me, when he catches me putting it on, that he can't even believe that I am wearing makeup when its on because it looks so natural.

Girls normally wear alot of makeup because they have confidence issues, and makeup makes them feel more attractive. Plus, alot of guys are total jerks about it and make fun of the ones that don't wear makeup at all.

Mostly because they aren't comfortable in their skin. They don't believe they are pretty enough. Its true, make-up DOES make you look prettier. But girl shouldn't just depend on that alone. They need to be more confident and independent. It would also help ALOT if a guy went up to her when she is not wearing make-up (one of those days she thinks she is not pretty) and tell her she is beautiful.

i always wonder the same thing when i pass by the numerous bleached blond haired, orange faced, black racooned eyed, frosty lidded girls at my school.
A lot of them i think would look a whole lot better w/o being caked in makeup.
Thy do that because al the so-called "popular" people do it (real popular people would have enough sense and wear an appropriate amount of makeup)they think it looks attractive(not really), they have low self esteem and want to hide their face or they think their hideous and the think that makeup will cover them up(kinda draws attention to their face).

They do it because they think the more makeup they put on, the more prettier they will look and will hide what they look like without any makeup. I use makeup but don't put that much on.

most girls wear TOO MUCH make-up because they have bad taste.
p.s. i think it's ridiculous how people are reacting to this question, as though wearing makeup makes someone fake or an ugly girl pretty or something, it doesn't hide anything other than miniscule imperfections like a little blemish, it doesn't change or hide your real face...

Some do it to cover things up, and others just feel more comfortable with a lot of makeup.
