Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia and bone, ear, skin, and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

Cephalexin in an antibiotic for bacterial infections, so yes, four times a day, and do take it. Bacterial infections can be passed on to babies during the birth (if it is a urinary tract infection) and cause problems. Your doctor would not prescribe this if he did not think you need it. He obviously wants to get this cleared up before the birth.

According to the web site I looked at there is no harm likely to your unborn child from taking these drugs.

Cephalexin is an antibiotic. It is a Lactation Risk Category L1 (safest!) and a Pregnancy Risk Category B (so pretty good.....A would be safest).

That sounds like a fairly normal dose. (My books indicate you'd be taking it every 6 hours, so yes, that would be 2000 mg per day.) If you are concerned you could call the pharmacy where you got your prescription filled and talk to the pharmacist on duty before you take it.

BTW.....
You should go ahead and take some acidopholis and/or eat yogurt with live cultures to help prevent you from getting thrush (yeast infection in your breasts) due to the antibiotics. Watch closely post-partum for any signs of thrush in mom and baby.

The dose of cephalexin for adults is 1 to 4 grams in divided doses.

That is an antibiotic. It's normal to take that much in a day. It is for some sort of infection. Because you are this close to delivery, I am sure that he/she wants to clear the infection before then.

"Cephalexin is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby."

Don't worry about the 4x/day; that's normal for an antibiotic.

Here are the drug warnings. I would be scared as well, but if you are having an infection of some sort, I am sure he wants it gone before you deliver. Good luck.

I've never heard of it, but your doc knows you're pregnant so I doubt he would prescribe you something you shouldn't take. You can also check with your pharmacist.
