I don't have any goldfish food at home, and it will be a while until I can go to my local grocery store. Is this safe?

Yes, you can feed them the tropical fish flakes for a while and it will be fine. The difference is that goldfish food is specially developed to aid in color, growth and the specific needs of goldfish to enhance full health, color and growth. I wouldn't feed them the tropical fish food all the time as it may not have all of the nutrients specifically needed for goldfish. Also, keep in mind, goldfish do not need to eat that often. If they miss a day or two or three, it won't hurt them. Underfeeding a goldfish is much better than overfeeding. I know we feel like they're starving, but their needs aren't the same as humans and they will be fine. You can also, and should regularly feed goldfish veggies and fruits such as dark green lettuce (not iceberg), spinach, broccoli, fresh or frozen peas with the skins removed, cucumbers, oranges, kiwis, grapes or boiled, chopped eggs. I'm sure you have at least one of these things at home and these would be as good or better for the goldies than the tropical fish food. Just remember to remove any uneaten food.

It doesn't really matter. Tropical fish food is safe for your goldfish, but goldfish food has things in it that are beneficial to your goldfish that may not be in ordinary tropical fish food. Read the packages and ask some preofessionals about it.

It will not hurt them, so yes it is okay. But do not buy tropical fish flakes for them all the time.

Tropical fish flakes usually consist of dead animal matter, while Goldfish flakes are mainly vegetation.
