Well if he is in a 2.5 gallon tank - he is not happy. That is way too small for a goldfish. Each inch of the fish needs at least 2 gallons of water. I do not know how big he is - but he really needs something bigger. They love to swim and have space. Also they produce a lot of waste - so the waste is building up very quickly in that small amount of water - filter or no filter.

I would normally say he is not lonely. But I have had customers come in and swear when a pair of fish lived together for so long and one died the other would become depressed or act different. Not sure if it could be related to the death or wahtnot.. but some do feel they get lonely.

You could get a much larger tank and get another fish - but please do not put another one in the 2.5 gallon.

About always seeming to be hungry - thats just how all goldfish are. You could feed them a million times and they would still act hungry, so do not worry about that.

NO, goldfish should have 10 gallons per three inches of fish. Ammonia will build up quickly in a 2.5 gallon tank and kill him

in 2 1/2 gallons you only have enough space for 1 goldfish. in 10 gallons you still really only have space for 1 goldfish. usually if goldfish are swimming around kind of aimlessly and eating they are happy. it doesn't take much to please them as their favorite things as far as i can tell are eating and makin poop. they really aren't that social -- they just tolerate each other better than some fish do.
