It is a natural biological function. Our bodies produce earwax, sweat and mucus as a means to keep dirt, debris, germs and bugs from entering our bodies. Our ears are self-cleaning; there are cilia in the ear canal that pushes the wax and whatever gets caught in it toward the outer ear, where we can wash it away with a washcloth.
However, humans messed-up the body's own natural function by "cleaning" the ears with cotton swabs. Many times, the swab actually pushes the wax deeper into the ear, beyond the cilia, so it can not be pushed out. Continued use will eventually result in a build-up or impaction that will require removal by a physician. This can be painful, as the ears are very sensitive and the wax can become quite hard.
Cotton swab use can also damage the cilia at the roots, and they will not grow back, which again impairs the ear's ability to keep itself clean. For some people, the ear canal is very narrow or has sharp twists and turns that make it difficult for the wax to move outward - these people typically schedule regular visits for ear cleaning.

This substance is part of your ear's natural cleaning mechanism. Dirt, bacteria, and even insects that might fly into your ears are trapped by the wax so the foreign materials don't harm your eardrum. The dirty wax slowly slides out of your ear canal and takes the gunk away. Sometimes ear wax builds up and causes hearing problems that require a doctor to remove the blockage

Cerumenal glads produce Cerumen. Ceruman is earwax. The amount of earwax you produce has to do with your heredity. If you are of African descent or any other decent where your ancestors were around sand you will produce excess Cerumen. People who are from European descent do not produce as much because there was never a need for it. The Cerumen was produced to protect the ear from the sand.

Wax is IN there to keep things OUT. Not sure what causes it, but to build it DOWN, clean them out every single morning and night.

I think that it is made by the skin in your ears, but it could just be dead skin cells and dust.
