I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction of some good African-American authors? I am looking to read some books that talk first-hand about the struggles that African-Americans have had to endure in regards to racism and prejudice in this country. I am about to read James Baldwin's "Go tell it on the mountain" which I have heard great things about. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance and God bless.

Toni Morrison "Beloved" "Song of Solomon"

Zora Neale Hurston "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (excellent excellent book)

Richard Wright "Native Son"

Go Tell it On the Mountain is a very good novel, indeed.

You can never go wrong with Maya Angelou or Langston Hughes.

Hope these are helpful

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is an excellent book for an inside view, and a huge amount of opinion, on the oppression of the black man at the hands of the white.

Toni Morrison is a wonderful author, as well as Zora Neale Hurston. Additionally, read some of the writings from Martin Luther King, Jr.

Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison
Fried Green Tomatoes - Fannie Flag. I am serious. Her book 'Welcome to the World, Baby Girl, will also help you.

On General Principle, read anything by Maya Angelou.

Start with Toni Morrison. She's good enough for Oprah.
