the letter also says that i will be commended for my work in scholarship, service, and character. And as a member, i will be counted on as a role model at my school and in the community. This sorta scares me

Many schools DO have national honor society chapters - I'm president of my school's chapter for one, and a member of two others.

AHS, at my school anyway (note that I'm not a member of this particular honor society, but of NHS, FHS, and ITS instead - they're all run about the same), is a group of students who has demonstrated excellence in their art classes at school.

You don't have to join if you don't want to. It's an honor to be invited, but it's certainly not mandatory. It does look nice on a college application, though, so that's something to think about down the line.

Officers are elected in honor society chapters just like in any other school club. The officers are more often than not upper classmen who are in charge of the groups activities and fundraisers.

There is usually an induction ceremony - usually you take a membership oath, get dressed up, sometimes get a membership pin, and your parents/family get to applaud your hard work.

Dues generally go to a few different things: funding group activities, paying membership dues to the national headquarters, paying for membership pins/graduation tassels (you'll often get an extra tassel for your high school graduation from each honor society you're inducted to), and senior scholarships.

I can't say how many freshman get inducted for your school, of course. My school's chapter inducted members junior year for AHS, but sophomore year for some others like FHS. Either way, it's definitely an honor - so congratulations!

More bogus "honors" societies..They are just trying to sell you a book with your name in it. It means nothing academically and will not buy you any credit from an academic institution.

Don't fall for this baloney! And DON'T send them any money!

One of the other answrs suggests this the National Honor Society at your High School - if it is a school club at your own school, then that's different, but DO NOT send any $$$ to any group outside the school -- they are bogus, for sure and just trying to sell you an expensive book with your name in it.

issues are worse. My dad and mom did no longer keep happening approximately how undesirable issues have been each and all the time- yet you hear this from human beings of each age now. we are over populated, funds is valueless, crime is going unpunished, no longer a secure international for toddlers- (contemporary information) a 4 year old stabbed to loss of life, that little boy(Rhys) shot- and whether they discover the killers- they gets some years interior at maximum. we are polluting the planet. we are slaves to desktops. This international is getting worse certainly. i will have had little ones if i could been growing to be up in the 1960's yet would not now because of the fact the destiny is bleak.

If it's a National society, then it is not from your school, they just got your name from the school. You absolutely do not have to join. If you do, all you will get is membership in the society, which is not much more than something you can pad your resume with. You will get a lot more of these letters from other societies, and you can really just toss them.
