I need some advice about substitute teaching. Pros and cons, interview advice, classroom management, activities, etc. Any ideas on any particular aspect of subbing. I plan to sub in the high school grades for general subjects.

One thing i always do is when taking attendance- draw a diagram of the seating arrangement and put their names on it. So then i know right away who is who. Sometimes highschool teachers do not leave the seating assignment. Make sure you also know the rules of the school as well- some schools do not allow students to go to the bathroom during class, have cellphones or mp3 players on, hats or hoods over their heads. Just let them know that all you ask of them is to behave and do what is assigned of them. Hopefully the teacher when he or she comes back will read your review of the day and give appropriate consequences.
Pros- if you come back and talk to the teacher, or leave your phone number where they can contact you- that is usually good.
Cons- You never know if the teacher does anything about the behavior the next day... unless you go find them
Activities: These are hard since you will have many different subjects and many different kids- Hopefully you are flexible enough to quickly learn what they are learning and make-up some problems for them.

They aren't as bad as everyone thinks and I sub in an inner city school. Sometimes they just like to talk about life and what to do after highschool-like college or jobs stuff- many of them don't know that information at all!

Have your day layed out, know what your going to do for the day in case the teacher doesn't leave you any work. Go over the rules that you expect and tell them if they don't follow these rules they will be written up and you will report exactly what it was that they did. Tell them no bathroom breaks until whatever time the entire class has one. If you can maybe get a tv and some videos that are educational.

As a student, make sure that you keep them under control and doing their work. I know a lot of my classmates who saw a sub and they're all "Yay, free day!"...which, really, it isn't.
Just be nice, but make sure to have a firm hand when need be. I know that it's a pretty stable job (at least at my school), especially during the spring time since there are a ton of teachers/coaches out for certain aspects.
