I have to do an 8 minute informative speech.
I would like to do it on some aspect of fashion although it's for college students..
so I'm not sure if everyone will find it as interesting as i will.
so far everyone in my class has a pretty serious topic about Darfur, historical events...etc...
but I want to do something that will be FUN
does anyone have any good topics about fashion?
or if not fashion, do you have any better ideas?
be as specific as you can...
thanks a bunch!

Mmm, ok here are some:

1. Some high performance textiles perhaps (try textiles with built in mp3 players or ones with Vitamin C for your skin to absorb). There is a very wide variety in this section. Most are still in concept stage, but you should be able to add something for everyone.

2. Pick your fave decade and analise how the historical events influenced the fashions of the day (e.g. 1940's much simpler styling and restrictions on the amount of buttons due to the WW2, thus make up and hair became really important).

3. Pick your fave current trend and trace it back accross the decades (e.g. where it started, why it phased out, how it came back into fashion, how the style was adapted in the modern version and who made it popular).

4. Something to do with child labour, wearing fur etc. You can name those who keep using these practices, what is being done to stop this etc.

Hope this helps, I've had to give many fashion speeches in my life, studying fashion and all. I'm sure you'll find something. Just don't make it too frivolous or you may sound like a fashionista who has lost touch with reality. Fashion has many scientific aspects that not many people are aware of, and most people have no clue as to what goes into the garments you see in stores everyday.

Good luck!

Use issues important in your community. For example, how do you feel about the memorial planned for Ground Zero? There is much information out there, and more than one way to see it. What are your classmates talking about? If Ms. Spears is a hot topic, you might want to talk about parenting issues - how much latitude should the courts have in severing parental control over a child's life? OJ? Should a criminal be allowed to profit from his crimes? What if his profits go to his own children or the children of his victims? If you want to take it on, politics is always a hot topic. Where do you stand on health care? Tax reform? Public finance of elections? Scan the talk show topics for current issues. Scan news magazines for headlines that capture your attention. I don't know your age group or area, so more specifics are difficult. If you are under 18, mental health care is a great subject. If you are under 21, planning for the future. 21 - 31 - family vs. career, 31 + personal happiness vs. financial security....and so on. Let us know what you decide, please.
