The princess ant takes over, seriously... I'm not joking. Every ant colony has a queen and a princess, when the queen dies, the princess becomes the queen. There couldn't possibly be a prince ant! The queen has all the larva, that's her job. Have you ever seen a male have children? (ok, ok, so the male seahorse does... but we're talking about ants here!)

It may not have been a queen ant? It is possible that it was a male ant that had mated and died. They have wings as well. Also, the queen will be inside the mound and remain very protected. She will not come outside under normal circumstances. It is possible that was a new queen that was searching to mate and then start a new colony. The success rate of those new queens is very low. The worst that will happen is that queen will never form a colony of her own.

Depends on the type on species.
Some ants will take over another colony or join them.
Others die because their whole purpose in life is to get food to her and the babies and protect them and without her they won't have any orders to carry out.
Also I've heard that another queen is born. It depends on what is fed to her and the temperature.

They alter the chemical make up of one of the eggs so it will become the queen.

There will always be some eggs left that the queen has just laid, so there are plenty available to be designated as the queen bee.

for many, but not all ant species, the death of a queen will trigger hormones in other ants to assume the role of queen. often there a multiple candidates who will battle for the position.
