Hey Terry , My wife is 5'-2" maybe one twenty. She rides a Yamaha V-Star 1100. She actually started on a 650 V-Star but quickly moved up. Dude there is really no safe way you can lighten a bike up. The main thing is your wife HAS to be able to flatfoot the bike. My wife can and has picked up her bike (its one of the things they taught her in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course) . I HIGHLY recommend the course. Teaching someone how to ride is hard enough....much less someone you go home with at night. Sign her up for the course. It takes three days and they provide the bikes usually 250cc. The course covers quite a few techniques and I promise you if she passes, she'll be able to ride. My wife and I travel around the country together on our vacations in the summer and it riding has brought us closer together.
Good luck to you and the wife.

PS see my 360 page for bike pics in the albums and see my blog entry "Why I Ride"

my girl learned on an 800 vulcan but honestly this aint no big feat as the modern metrics are so well balanced that even a 1500 vulcan would have been no problem the 750 honda shouldnt be a big deal either mary only wieghs in at 115 lbs

Lower the honda to where her feet hit the pavement with her but on the seat comfortably. She will not ahve to worry about losing any weight off ot the bike. If you have saddlbags and all that custom stuff on it then just remove any excess stuff. Peace D.

i know of women who ride road kings, electra glides, fat boy's, and low riders with no problem.....and these bikes would all be alot heavier than the shadow. once the bike gets moving, she wont even notice the weight until she hits a few bumps. the heavier the bike, the smoother the ride; the weight soaks up the bumps.

if she's worried she wont be able to be able to pick it up if she were to drop it, there's an easy technique to lift even a big gold wing.
