You can put a dehumidifier in the room. You want to take the moisture out of the room.

You can get dry wall compound at a home improvement store and use that to fix the crack. You'll need a short handled spatula type thing, cheap plastic ones are fine, and apply thin layers to the crack, smoothing them out as you go. Let dry and apply again as needed. Then just sand smooth with fine sand paper, brush off the dust and paint.

The best way is to realize that dry wall work is a slow & boring process. Put on a layer, go watch a movie, do something else, just don't rush it. The job will turn out better if you don't.

At home depot, you can get hamilton's 5 min, 20 min and 40 min quick set, it comes in powder form in a 25lb bag... always put the water in the pan first and add the product... takes a little extra mixing and never make more than your going to use in that time frame...

if it dries out too fast, you risk it cracking. there is a powder mix that is quick setting if you feel the need for speed, but it doesn't give you as long to work with it. that is what the pro's use for that quick first coat so that they can get a 2nd coat of the regular mud on the first day, then they use the regular stuff for the finish coats.

You can raise the temperature of the room, as long as you don't go over 100 degrees F it won't hurt anything.

I would use a fan. You can tell when it's dry by the powdery color to it. It wouldn't hurt it.
