I have heard of some people who keep crayfish with their small fish, like dwarf gouramis and such. I've always wanted one and I'd like to know about their compatability with small fish.

Thanks

Crayfish are far more aggressive than some people give them credit for. In ponds I have seen cuts from crayfish claws on fish over a foot long. Herbivores that would not be making a snack on the crayfish, but just got too close. Couple that with the fact that many subspecies of crayfish can get 8-10" long and you have a nasty problem for fish to have to avoid. Over all I would advise against it. While the crayfish may or may not be able to eat the fish in question, they will certainly be able to hurt your fish as well as the fact that the fish will be stressed simply by the presence of the crayfish.

Crayfish will kill and eat any fish they can catch. Crayfish can swim but they tend to stay at the bottom of the tank. If you have fish that tend to swim in the middle or top of the tank they would be the most compatible with crayfish. Bottom dwellers will most likely get eaten.

a gourami isn't a good match for a crayfish. try a fan shrimp with a gourami. they are fun to watch -- they have little webs on 4 front feed and put them out like nets to catch bits of food. they are also called filter/bamboo/wood/singapore shrimp and a few other names i can't remember offhand too.

umm, if you dont want to see all of your fish missing one morning, it is not a wise suggestion, i had a crayfish and all of my goldfish came up missing all of a sudden. fish is the crayfishes prefered diet of choice, specially if they are live fish.
