Relax. 42% is probably fine. It is probably hardddrive space. but how big is the drive. because 42% of 100GB will still hold a couple dozen games, thousands of songs, and countless pictures.
Of course, if wanted more available memory resources you could free up anything you don't need. Read instructions on how to increase virtual memory in your start menu's help center. Add some RAM.
One thing I do is go to two places on my computer. 1 is the task manager hit ctrl-alt-del. Do a search on each process, especially those that are using cpu cycles. A lot of programs put stuff in your computer you don't need. kill it. But how to keep it from coming back without, say, uninstalling the whole application? 2 go to your run box and type in "msconfig". then go the tab called startup. how much of that stuff do you really need running all the time, starting when your computer does. You don't need hardly any of that crap constantly running (everything in that tab is constantly running and eating your resources).

Do you have unused files on your computer? Sometimes you have some older games or unused files (or you no longer use), you should try to remove them totally so you can have more space on your hard drive. If this doesn't help, remove some older the files you rarely use or files you use maybe ones you use maybe once a week since all they do is just sit there take a lot of space.
If that doesn't work too well, maybe you should get extra Gega Byte on your computer just to be on the safe side.

Check what programs are launching in your start menu. Get rid of ALL of them, unless absolutely essential to your PC operating. That should help.

Buy more memory. Memory is KING and I would try to have at least 1GB RAM, preferably 2GB.
