I use a site called nearhere, they used to have everything organized by activities (and still do sort of), but switched it to be arranged by date. Even so, there's still a bunch of fun stuff to see and do.

The Zoo is pretty famous, as is Sea World, but they also cost money. If that isn't a problem, consider the weather. If it's hot, you might want to go to Sea World. If it's cooler, go to the Zoo. The animals get lazy and tired if it's hot.

If you're looking for something inexpensive, visit the Gaslamp district in Downtown and maybe sample some restaurants. My pick, however, is Balboa Park, as there are lots of great museums to go to--some days out of the month, they're free admission, too! Old Town is also a fun choice, and it hosts good sights, good food, and good shopping.

You can also go to Point Loma and visit the Cabrillo Monument, which is close to the water (and cliffs, and is really pretty), so you can visit tidepools at the same location.

It really depends on what your interests are. Out of towners visiting San Diego usually enjoying dining at a romantic restaurant with a view of the city. I'd recommend Georges at the Cove for viewing a spectacular coastal sunset.

Another fun thing is to drive to the top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a great view of the city....(also another spot for viewing a sunset).

Kayaking, hiking, biking, theater, museums.....there are just so many possibilities in San Diego.

I almost never visit San Diego without going to Horton Plaza and Seaport Village for some shopping.

Balboa Park which is right next to the Zoo.
Mission Beach on the boardwalk, there is also a wooden Roller coaster there as well.
La Jolla Cove where the Seals are hanging out at over in what was or still is known as Children's pool.

The San Diego Zoo and their African Safari site are both terrific.
