I'm a US citizen/Cdn resident enrolled in grade 11 in Canada.
I'm interested in applying to US colleges, but I've only studied one year of foreign language in grade 9 (french), and I do not plan on studying it again (partly because I'd have to go back to studying it as grade 10 french). I meet the minimum/exceed all the academic course requirements for most colleges, except for the foreign language.
Should I be concerned? Would it really matter if I had one year instead of two? I don't exactly have a way to take a foreign language again until next year. If I do take the foreign language, I'd be taking grade 10 french as a grade 12. I want to take more challenging university preparation courses in my grade 12 year.
What should I do? Will I be able to just pass by with one year of foreign language? I'm really worried because most schools I'm looking look for 2 years of foreign language. Are these requirements geared more towards kids in american high schools?

wow...... now I'm really stressed out
thank you all for the feedback,
would it be that bad if I took ANOTHER foreign language (ie: chinese, japanese) instead of grade 10 french?

I would take the foreign language class. Some universities are really strict about their policies and may not consider you if you do not fulfill the requirements. Also maybe check into taking a credit exam instead. I took a credit exam instead of the actual course and was valid for where I went to school.

You will hurt your chances at many colleges in the US. Foreignlanguage is an intregal part of a real education. And believe me--you will find all the "challenge" you could ask for. Second year language classes after a 2-year break are not to be taken lightly.

It is not "an American" thing--quite the opposite. In most countries the requirements for foreign language are far mor rigorous. America is the only major nation with such lax standards (2 years of high school foreign language).

take french now if you want to attend a decent college. Minimum requirements are usually 2 years of the same language. Don't take a different language. Some schools even suggest 3 or 4 but those are more elite schools.

Hi Becky - I would continue but find out if maybe you can take a year in a different language, like Mandarin or Japanese for some variety. I don't know what you want to study in the future, but in this global economy, knowing 1 or 2 languages would give you such an unbelievable leg up and it's never wasted.
