you are asking a question that brings a lot of different answers that people don't like to hear. The problem with Iran is that it is the only nation that the Shiite Muslims are the majority and as a result the have protection there. The Shiites are the minority of the Muslim world as they believe in the nephew of Muhammad as their spiritual leader. As a result they also go against the rest of the Muslim world in teachings. They are also Persians and not Arabic. The main useful purpose that you can grant them is the fact that they do protect the Shiite Muslim right to practice.
The best analogy of the Shiite VS Sunni Muslims is comparing the Catholics Vs Protestants in Ireland. This will be an answer that will be long time coming to answer.

The US supported a hard-line authoritarian dictator that ran the country poorly. When the population revolted, it coalesced around the only opposition that was organized and widespread: islamists. During the revolt, anti-american sentiment ran understandably high, and a mob took the American embassy and held the staff as hostages. The hostage crisis took well over a year and brought down Jimmy Carter's presidency. It was solved by an agreement between Reagan and Khomeini. Reagan continued underhanded support of the Ayatollahs during his presidency (see Iran-Contra scandal). At the same time the US publicly supported Saddam in the series of wars between Iran and Iraq. That caused the death of hundreds of thousands of Iranians, many at the hands of chemical weapons that were provided by the US through intermediaries in Germany, the Netherlands and Singapore. So that's all there is to it. The Iranian people overthrew a US puppet regime and humiliated the US by taking their embassy staff hostage and defeating attempts to free them by force. The Iranians have plenty of cause to loathe the US. Regrettably, the west has not learned from this, and continues to support dictatorships until the only opposition left is islamist. When he revolution eventually comes, the result is an islamist regime that hates the west.

Iran has a lot of crude oil and it is the only resource that the world could benefit from it. The US is interested in attacking it because of oil just like what it did in Iraq.

hmm that's a tuff question.. i don't think it is good for much but when you consider the old testaments and some stone plaques have scriptures about Iran was the real garden of Eden..where today's mankind was made..apparently with alien intervention then i think we have got a lot to respect it for as we would not be here without it.
