HVAC is a good job. As all households have this and there is a need for repairmen this field will always be accepted and in demand. For the job itself it is fairly clean and if you are an honest and respectable serviceman you will be recommended. The worst part of the job would be convincing people of the problem they have and I recommend a second opinion if they are in question. The easiest part is getting established after getting the respect from your customers when you show you have the knowledge and they know you aren't out to squeeze them for every penny they have. Good Luck and Be True.

I've been in and out the business over the last 17 years here in Phoenix. The hardest this is HVAC is that it is an industry of extremes; either extreme heat or extreme cold. It is not a lazy persons career path. Routine maintenance is the easiest thing to do becasue it is generally something you do while the weather is mild. The hardest is attic installations (confined space, summer)or manufactured home installations with under trailer duct runs. Most guys start off installing learning the ropes. I own my own company now and one of the other comments said making (taking) the money. I won't lie, money is good, but the work can be damn hard.

HVAC is a miserable job. I spent over a year in trade school working and learning to gain a basic understanding. I also worked a summer internship wherein I cleaned coils, replaced faulty parts, and charged low systems. My summer internship was great but after I graduated I had to take any job available. If you go to trade school try to complete your program so that you can apply in the early Spring when most places are hiring. I graduated in late fall and had to take any job that was hiring. I currently work long or short days with low pay and no health benefits. I have to crawl under very low houses and get into attics. Honestly, the attics aren t too bad compared to having to be under a house and work for hours if not days at a time. Install work is the absolute worst especially installing duct work. You will be hot, cold, and covered with fiberglass insulation. Don t even want to think about what all you are breathing in. I never know when I am going to get off. Some weeks I get few hours and some more than I want. The job overall is just miserable and I regret ever having wasted my time in trade school. Try to find a factory job with high skill and high demand.

Yes, I work in HVACR the R is for refrigeration. the easiest thing is to reset a circuit breaker or set the thermostat properly. The hardest thing for me is climbing to and working on rooftop units, in the cold of winter, and the heat of summer, it's just you and the elements. I work on commercial systems about half HVAC and half refrigeration. Good pay but hard work. I am 46, in 1 or 2 more years I will work on residential systems or do something different all together, my knees are starting give me problems.

The easiest thing is service work. Going out and trouble shooting an existing system. The hard part is install, crawling under houses, up in attics, the heat of summer and the cold of winter. In short; like every other job, you start on the short end of the stick, and work your way up to were you can work as a lead man.
