I think this one is sort of like confession in the Catholic Church (bear with me here).
When you confess, the confession and absolution process only works (according to Catholic Theology, I don't really believe in any of this but it makes a good metaphor) if your heart if pure - if you are really sorry.
I think it is okay to use words like fa g only so long as your heart if pure. If there is but a hint of homophobia in you, it is not okay.

I dunno....how does your friend feel about it? Its really his call. Some gay guys take it as joking and don't care (as long as its just a close friend), others take it as insult.
