Windfall plums have sprouted into saplings - how do I remove the saplings without damaging main tree?

Pull them out just after a rain when the soil is moist. Either by hand if small, or by using a rope at the base of the trunk tied to a power vehicle.

How is going to damage the main tree if they are windfalls and not connected?
