which is best for bedding up my pigs, they are fatteners and are inside in the winter we use wheat but i have a feeling that barley straw would possibly be better?

If you have the same access to either one and the price is the same, go with barley. It's cleaner, has some nutritional value if the hogs should eat it and it doesn't clump up or breack down near as easily as wheat,

Barley straw is best as the pigs will also eat it and thus fatten. I always bed my cattle on barley straw in winter, for the same reason. It is more expensive if you have to buy it though. I grow my own corn crops.Wheat, barley and oats.

Barley or oat straw is better for pigs. It's much nicer for them to make their beds with and these days, with the modern combines, you don't get the 'hoils' (prickly bits) in it like you used to. They may eat a bit of it so you might use more.

One of my friends throws it for 'munchies' too. After feeding the normal feed and hay amount. Gives them something to eat overnight and through the day until she arrives at feeding time at night. I've used older grass hay for the same thing. It has very low nutritional value...but is used as a 'filler.' The horses are fed an appropriate amount for them...then the older hay keeps them busy through the night. I don't use straw...but some do...
