Okay, so I usually don't ask for help with this sort of stuff, but I really cant seem to get the answer..

A 48-inch board is to be cut into three pieces so that the second piece is 3 times as long as the first piece and the third piece is 4 times as long as the first piece. If x represents the length of the first piece, find the lengths of all three pieces.

Hmm, that "x" doesn't really mean anything, it won't be in your answer, but it can be handy in figuring this out.

This is pretty straight forward. however many inches the first piece is, you can say it's one times that length. Then your second piece is 3 times it and your third piece is 4 times it. Imagine all the pieces together, and you get 1 x plus 3 x's plus 4 x's. Add them all together and your board is 8 x's long.

I'm sure you can figure it out from here.

since the board is 48 inches long, all the pieces have to add up to 48.
first piece = x
second piece = 3x
third piece = 4x

x + 3x + 4x = 48
8x = 48
x = 6

first piece = 6 in
second piece = 18 in
third piece = 24 in

Piece one called A : x times y = rest of it
Piece two : called B : 3xA=B
Piece three: called A: 4xA=C
I do not resolve! The Calculating must be your own!
So A equals b/3
and A equals c/3
The rest is pure calculating. Your teacher would crucify me if I go any further.
