It's very true. Aluminum is recycled and "valuable" so some organizations will allow you to collect let's say 10,000 and they will donate a wheelchair or something.

I don't know if it earns them money but the story goes that the man that invented the ring tab had a brother that died of kidney failure when he was younger. After the inventor got rich he started a foundation that paid for kidney dialyzes. One tab got you one second free of this procedure. I also know that McDonald's uses them for their Ronald McDonald Houses.

It's true. The tabs are pure aluminum and so they get more per pound.
