the atomic mass is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom. if you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass you will get the number of neutrons. the number of protons is also the number of electrons . electrons are not counted in the atomic mass since they have almost mass at all.

The atomic mass of an element is the mass (weight) of all of the subatomic particles in the atom, meaning that it is the weight of all of the protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons have roughly a weight of 1, and electrons have very little weight.
The atomic mass is going to larger than the atomic number, since it is the weight of not only the protons, but of the neutrons and electrons as well. An example of this is silicon. Silicon has an atomic number of 14, and an atomic mass of roughly 28.

BTW if this is homework this should probably be in your book... you would do yourself a world of good if you learned to look stuff up.
