I have an office inside a building. The office roof is 2x6 with 3/4" plywood. My safety guy is asking me for the load rating on the roof. How can I calculate this rating?

Thanks. I am not looking to add a second floor, I just need to know how much load I could put on it. The room is about 15' wide with the 2x6 ' s on 16" centers. I have some boxes stored on the roof and I am continually asked if the roof can handle the load.

look around your house, most floors are made of at least 2X8's, or 2X10's. see how much the load is on those floors, so that will give you an idea. like the other answer said, check at the library or contact the local building inspector. good luck.

There are books that give you the max. span and load for different species and sizes of lumber. But right away I can tell you a 2x6 roof spanning over 4ft will not be sufficient for a second floor. Just go to the library and find the quick reference manuals.
