That's a load of bull. Young fish aren't mature yet. I have a year old female who hasn't even got eggs in her belly yet (she's see-through cellophane colored so you can see she hasn't got eggs yet). You want an older female and male. Pet store fish, crowntails and veiltails are usually considered the mutts of the betta world. Sure they can produce some pretty fish for pet purposed, but they very rarely breed true to color and other genetics.

i don't breed bettas but i get young bettas from the petstore all the time. often only about 8-10 weeks. they are about 1/2 size and not fully colored yet and about 1/2 size. they do sell a lot of older bettas at many stores though. you an also try locating bettas breeders in your area. here is a good jump page for information on where to find a breeder near you.

Bettas from pet stores can breed, that's some false info you were told. However, if you want to get really good fish, join the International Betta Congress. They have tons of breeders that will sell you really good fish for fair prices. They also have a junior show division where you can show off your babies when they grow up. Just goole the International Betta Congress for membership info.

Good luck!

I know you said petstores are bad but your local Petco or Petsmart are sure to have great bettas. We've had 5 and if you didn't already know, you cant put a boy with a boy because they'll start acting like its the midevil days and they will fight til the death. But seriously try a Petsmart near by.

That's not always true. I bred a female from petsmart to a male I picked up at a local fish store. If the male is nest building he is set to go no matter the age. Good Luck!! It takes planning and time..
