Why are they called Green Day?

I thought it was because when you get high, you have a 'Green Day', but I also found this.

GREEN DAY - 1) It may have come from the sci-fi movie Soylent Green when they said "Tuesday is soylent green day." Soylent green was a food produced by a corporation to feed the way overpopulated masses; turns out they were also making it from the masses! 2) Another story is that when they dropped out of school to be musicians, their principal said "It'll be a green day in hell before you make anything of yourselves". 3) Some say that in drug slang - if you smoked pot and goofed off all day, it was a "Green Day."

Well, back in the day when Green Day were Sweet Children, Billie Joe had written a song called Green Day, you can find this on 1,039 Smoothed out Slappy Hours which is a CD of the records. Ironically you can also find a song called Sweet Children on Kerplunk too.
Anyway, Tre Cool had a jacket with Green Day written on the back, and everyone thouhght that that was there name, so they just ended up calling their band Green Day instead, much better choice! And yes they were/are stoners lol.

Billie Joe picked the phrase up from friends while chilling in his "habitat" (in the basement of a Berkeley University building), and wrote the song Green Day about his first pot experience. The group changed their name from Sweet Children to Green Day in 1990.

it had many reasons

they started out as sweet children, but as they grew older they realized that they would outgrow the name so oe day they were all sitting around ad TV watching seasme street while smoking pot/weed and billie wrote a songcalled green day and they named their band after that

also as they were watching seaseme street, ernie said "it's GREEN DAY" and that had something to do with it, coincedence that enie is on the back of dookie?? i think not

and it was East Bay slang back thena nd while billie joe was at The Gilman (local punk comunity) someone had said it, and he liked the name of it

also it was when their veins would turn green from the heirone
