don't believe, thinking is more accurate

At the subatomic level, matter is indeed mostly "empty" space. However, the atoms in solid matter pack together as closely as their electron clouds will allow. You can't pass through your chair because your electron surface and its electron surface will not allow it.

It isn't so much that everything is an illusion as it is that at small enough scales, the universe no longer makes sense in the ways we're accustomed to thinking about things.

You are not thinking of attraction force among the atoms that decide the type of matter. If it is maximum then you are talking about a solid, medium then liquid and least then gas. Wood is solid having attraction force that is found in solids.

The atoms in your wood chair are quite far apart; for atoms, not for you. And as the above answer tells you, bonding in objects such as wood are strong, or it would not be solid.

They are not solid, but the bonds between them don't shift.

Think you will fall through your chair. Do you?
