I agree with Mythbusters, haveing the windows rolled down. AC compressors have become pretty efficient over the past 10 yrs with very little draw and most are computer controlled now. 10 yrs ago will would have said the opposite, but in todays vehciles, haveing the windows down

Either speed range with the A/C OFF the car will be more fuel-efficient. To turn the A/C compressor the engine needs to work harder and for this it needs more fuel. But, if it's a large car or truck with big engine, the difference in the fuel economy will be very small. If it's a small car the difference will be notable. They say at highway speed the car is more efficient with the A/C ON, but in fact just last week I did measure gas mileage of my car with a/c on and off and I got 27mpg without AC and 25mpg with A/C on highway

Both use more gas. Try driving with the windows up and AC off. This will give you the best fuel mileage. Also alway driv downhill and if you must go uphill, go down hill first to pick up extra speed and coast up the hill. Drive with the earth's rotation when possible and take advantage of the prevailing winds.( An old sailing tactic)

having the air conditioner on will use more gas. When the A/C is on, the engine is driving the compressor that makes the refrigerant cold. This requires extra power from the engine and it will use more gas.

Having the AC on will. Driving with the window down dosent create enough drag unless you are driving well over 100 mph.

Having the a/c on burns more gas. Use the economy setting if you want to use the a/c. It will still burn more gas, but not as fast.
