I know it's morally wrong, but is it illegal?...like, would they come after you or follow a paper trail after discovering an incident???

If you know it's wrong and your con-scions bothers you give it back .
If they call on you to please return it ( note the word 'please') be a good citizen and give it back .
Legally I think you can keep it. I am not 100% sure . I would give it back in any event .

No I don't think it is. I mean they gave it to you right. Unless it's like a really, really big amount. But yeah it's more a moral thing I believe.

Bring it to their attention. If they insist that you keep the excess, you are off the hook. And, no, it's not illegal.
